[UPHPU] white space between divs

now I'm getting white space between divs - I've tried a number of 
"fixes" (ie *{margin:0}, p{margin 0;}, padding: 1px;  overflow:hidden;) 
but none of these seem to work - at least in firefox, konqueror, 
arora(webkit).   It especially seens to happen with clear: both;

have any of you css fans had and solved this problem ? 

or is it just the straw that's breaking the camel's back (css 
frustration) and driving me back to tables ?
