I'm with Lonnie and Velda on this. I don't like to implement captchas
because it makes it less likely that someone who wants to sign up for a
site will sign up. It's one more step that can cause users to give up
before they sign up. In fact, I had to remove a captcha from a family
forum I put up once because I had some relatives that couldn't figure
out what to do with it. Rather than going to each house and giving an
elementary school education about captcha use, I got rid of it. If I
implement captcha, there's only one reason, and that's because I need to
block automation and spy bots. I certainly don't need it to get more
users... Furthermore, if I wrote a captcha and someone broke it, I'd
look for a way to improve it. That's called an escalation.
