I would double check that you mac is not blocking that port via the firewall.
Check out the system prefs - security - firewall - advanced and make sure that
the firewall is allowing access to that port. I would also double check and make
sure that the server is up and running and accepting connections on that port as
well. I know that with my mac and postgresql/mysql i needed to add them to the
list of open ports.
